Frequently Asked Questions

Will there be a livestream option?

Our plans for recording and livestreaming fell through last minute in 2022.  After much consideration, for 2023 we’ve decided to record the talks and air them later as a series of separate online events, rather than livestream the entire conference.

There are a few reasons for this.  First, our in-person conference is quite large, so it would be impossible to have an interactive livestream experience while also trying to take questions and comments from in-person attendees  Secondly, because this is a 2 1/2 day event, there are very few people who would actually tune in for the entire event online - that’s a lot of time alone in front of one’s computer screen.

So rather than a livestream, please stay tuned for a series of interactive online events, with a replay of each talk and a chance to live-chat with attendees and ask questions of the speaker afterwards.

Where do my fees go?

This is not a for-profit enterprise.  Fees for attendees go to pay for venue rental, food, and the costs of bringing speakers.  In the unlikely event that a profit is generated, it will go towards future FSIM events.

What do I get for my conference fee?

Your conference fee includes access to all talks and a chance to interact with speakers, Friday supper, Saturday and Sunday lunch and snacks.  (Breakfasts are included with accommodations at most local hotels, including the Inverary Resort).

Will I need a rental car?

Baddeck is a small village and easily walkable.  Assuming you are staying in the village, you will not need a car during the conference as everything is walkable.  If you are having trouble booking a rental car in the current post-COVID economy, please contact us and we may be able to find a local attendee willing to transport you from the airport.

Why is the conference hosted in Cape Breton?

Although we are a little out-of-the-way, the trip is worth it.  Cape Breton has been called “Canada’s best-kept secret” by National Geographic (an organization with some of its roots in Baddeck).  The Cabot Trail, hiking opportunities, and natural beauty make it well worth visiting.

Do I have to be a doctor or in the medical field to attend?

Not at all!!  Although this conference will have some medical content, the talks and topics are relevant to anyone with an interest in the issues to be discussed.  All are welcome.

Do you have a refund policy?

If you change your mind for any reason, we will refund 75% of your registration fee up to Sept 30th.  Oct 1st to 20th cancellations will be refunded 50%.  No refunds will be available on or after Oct 21st. If the conference is cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances (read: new government travel mandates), we will refund your registration fee
